Today, most psychiatric and mental diseases are diagnosed only after clinical symptoms arise, primarily because current technologies do not enable earlier detection. Molecular technology has the potential to transform the diagnosis in medicine from symptom related to a more specific one by finding dysfunctional physiology in certain brain area’s.
Hence we foresee a future in which psychiatric and mental diseases can be diagnosed earlier and its progress can be monitored and controlled. Clinicians will be able to start therapy before clinical symptoms arise or even to take preventive measures so that the disease need not (fully) develop. We envisage that molecular diagnostics will become a routine medical procedure to effectively diagnose and monitor psychiatric diseases in the future.
